Your's, Mine & Forever ~ Joanne Markey

This is Book 2 of the Taking Chances Series.  This is the continued story about Norah and Clay both wanting to adopt the same children so they will not be separated.  When Norah finds that because she is single they will not let her adopt.  Then you have Octivia come into the story and make sure both people do not get to adopt the children.   In book one, Clay wants to marry Norah so they can keep the children, when that doesn't work out Clay steps back and withdraws his application.  Back to this book, Norah is given through Christmas to keep the children and then will have to give them up.... Can Clay and Norah come to terms to keep them together and the children?  

I would recommend this to those that like a good romance series.  Both books keep you guessing until the end.  It is a mystery where all the characters are connected, but comes together very well in the end. You can read this as a stand alone, however, reading book one before this one will give much more of the background and appreciation for the story.  I was glad I read book one and then book two so that I really understand the feelings of each character.

When people find out I’m an Aussie living in the US and that I’ve written books, they immediately assume my books are set in Australia. I’m sorry to disappoint anyone, but, no, they’re not. You see, after almost 19 years of living in the US I’ve lost touch with the culture I was raised in. Things are done differently here than they are over there, and I’ve gotten used to this life.

When I moved halfway around the world, iPads, smart phones, and the like weren’t even a thing. The internet over there (in the places I lived) was something you knew about, but not everyone was online. My family didn’t even own a computer. When you went to town you lost cell phone coverage about 20 kms out. We lived in the bush, which technically falls between the coast and the outback. Not far enough from the coast to be “outback”, but far enough there wasn’t a town worth mentioning in any direction for a good two hour drive (roughly 170km, if memory serves me correct). So yeah, we lived out bush and while it’s hard to imagine a world without the electronics we depend on so much today, the Australia I know, the life I remember, had none of them. And I’m pretty sure things have changed since then!

That’s one major issue standing between me and writing books set in Australia. Another is the language. Half the time I find it almost impossible to remember where a phrase originated. I’m not talking about the “fair dinkums” or the “g’days”, they’re easy to identify. Its the little phrases, the ones that are so ingrained in my thinking I can’t identify their origin. At least, not until every person in the room looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. I figure it out pretty quickly after that and usually have to scramble to translate to something they understand. Agreeing with someone by uttering a simple “yes” is a wee bit more effective here than the “too right!” I might use with my family.

Try adding in the whole dropping the R thing Aussies have a habit of doing, and then the clear pronunciation of the R which is pretty common among the people I know here…and yeah, it can get confusing. “Far” is a bad one. Simple word. I never stop to think about how I’m saying it, so part of the time I’ll drop the R without realizing I’ve done so. Then I’ll hear myself say “fah”, so I’ll quickly tack on the R… and it can become an issue.

Some expats might not have an issue with speech, this is just one problem I run into quite often so I ran with it in my book. Anyone who’s read the book will know who I’m talking about. Multiple languages, speech confusion especially when emotional. It’s a thing. Not everyone deals with it, but me… yeah. Sigh.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve turned my back on everything I once knew. My husband and our kids love a good damper, Aussie meat pies, and Vegemite. They turn their noses up at pavlova (where, oh, where did I go wrong?!), but little did I know when we bought some of my favorite Aussie music that it would become their favorite too. I love where I live now, but I also have a great fondness for the country I left behind, and my family too, of course. They all live over there. And this story… it originated in Australia.

I was looking for a something to write for NaNo in 2018 and my Mum had a dream to share, so she gave me the idea and I ran with it. I changed bits here and there—the setting, most of the story actually!—and finished it up mid-December of 2018. I sat on it for about six months, finally got around to sending it to an editor. And then two weeks before I hit publish, a friend heard how long it was and asked if I’d ever thought about splitting the story in two.

No, I hadn’t, but after hashing it out with my editor, we decided it was a good idea. Dreaming of More became the first half, and Yours, Mine, & Forever was born.

However, giving Dreaming an end meant I’d sort of wrapped up the main storyline I’d used in the entire 135,000 word manuscript. I needed something else because I hadn’t added the bow to the top of the package and without that, Dreaming kind of fell flat. It needed another book… So back to the editor I went and at 2am one morning we started brainstorming. Before I knew what was happening I was in the middle of rewriting the entire book. I didn’t need to follow the same storyline and because the slate had been cleared, I could add in whatever I wanted. So I did.

My friend apologized—she hadn’t meant for me to rewrite the entire book—but no apology was necessary. I loved being able to change things. New characters made it more fun and, as my youngest son would say, I got to add “all the stuffs”. The only thing I refused to change was the ending. I had to keep that because it was the one thing my Mum remembered the best from her dream. For her sake, I kept it. If you want to know what that ending is… it comes after all the other pages in the book. But if you skip over them, you’ll miss all the stuffs and they’re what make the ending worthwhile.

Hearts set free ~ Jess Lederman

This book is really unique type of story.  It takes place in many different eras of time and many different characters.  This book takes you on a journey with many different people at different times of their lives.  Each person's story is not related to the other's. When reading each chapter it starts over with a new person and a new story.  It leaves you wondering how does all of this go together in this story line.... what is the divine appointment in this book?

I had a hard time keeping up with this book, it is written in a style that I have not read before.  It was very hard to get into the storyline and hard to follow.  I think there was too many storylines, causing me to have problems of keeping it all straight.  I also felt this book was too long for me, it seemed like it kept going, and going and going.  I would suggest that maybe if the author made it a series with each book about one character and then the last book of the series have it all tied in together, I would have enjoyed it more.

About the Author

After I graduated with a degree in music from Columbia University, a lust for expensive pianos drew me into an unexpected career in finance. It turned out that I had a knack for business; I gained much that the world had to offer and became a hedonist, a gambler who haunted the poker rooms of Las Vegas, and an arrogant atheist. I’ve written fiction for most of my life, and at one point I quit work to devote myself to writing a novel. During that time, my late first wife, Teri, and I lived in Paris, down the street from where Hemingway once lived, and later in the mountains of Idaho. But the novel was never published, for I was a man whose soul had not yet awakened, who did not yet have anything important to say. So I went back to the business world.
One day, when we were living in Dallas, Teri heard a radio interview with Francis Collins, an eminent scientist who wrote The Language of God, which tells the story of his journey from atheism to becoming a disciple of Christ. Collins’ book led us to the writings of C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald*, who became the midwives of our rebirth from above.

Several years later, Teri was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and we left Dallas and the business world behind and moved to a small town in Alaska. There we looked out on the glory of God’s creation and read to our heart’s content during the last two years of her life. Faced with tragedy, we learned to trust utterly in Him, and He blessed us with the peace that surpasses all understanding.
It was after Teri’s death, while I was still living in the far north, that the idea for Hearts Set Free—which opens in the Alaska Territory in 1925—was born. People who know that the novel contains autobiographical elements (and several historical characters) sometimes ask me, “How much of the story is true?’ And I answer, “Perhaps twenty percent—and the rest is even more true!” What drives my writing is the desire to convey truths that transform lives. Truths of the heart.
In 2013, I met a wonderful woman—my current wife, Ling—and soon we began talking about having children. “Impossible!” said our doctors. “According to your test results, there’s no chance at all, even using the latest techniques.” Of course, within two months of that pronouncement, Ling was pregnant with little David, who just turned three, and we subsequently adopted Daniel, who’s now twelve.
After David’s birth, we moved to southwest Washington. I’m currently at work on a novel set in Las Vegas in 1955, and, when I’m not writing or chasing my sons around, can usually be found at the piano playing Chopin nocturnes for Ling.

I first conceived of Hearts Set Free in the far frozen north, not long after my first wife, Teri, passed away. She had been diagnosed with ALS, an invariably fatal disease, when we were living in Dallas, and within a month we decided that I’d quit my job so we could move to a small town in Alaska. We bought a small house based on the view out of the living room windows; there we’d be able to spend the time she had left in peace, and gaze out at the glory of God’s creation.
Teri—a woman who untiringly searched for truth—was the inspiration for Joan Reed, one of the main characters in the book, and Alaska—the Last Frontier!—entered into the story as well. We were living not far from the headquarters of the Iditarod, the iconic thousand-mile dog sled race that takes place each year. The Iditarod was modeled after an amazing race against time which occurred in the icy darkness of an Alaskan winter in 1925, when dogsled was the only way to get diphtheria serum to the remote town of Nome and save ten thousand lives. Hearts Set Free begins with that dramatic event.
I put a lot of myself—the bad along with the good!—into other characters in Hearts Set Free. Up until I became a Christian, I had all of the arrogant narcissism of atheist Tim Faber, a T.V. producer intent on proving that mankind has no need of God. I also have the questioning spirit of David Gold, a Bible-school dropout turned boxer who is led by the Lord to become a heroic pastor, and of young Luke Noongwook, a native Alaskan who goes on a quest to find his missing father. Their need to understand difficult aspects of Scripture are based on a passionate desire to love God with all their heart and strength and soul and mind. As is mine!
As a young man, I’d been greatly impressed by E.L. Doctorow’s novel Ragtime, which blended fictional and historical characters, and I decided to use the same approach in Hearts Set Free. Parts of the novel are set in the early and mid-1900s (especially the 1930s), and Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion of the world, and Georges Lemaitre, who was both a physicist and a priest—a man who corrected Albert Einstein, and is probably the greatest scientist of whom most people have never heard!—play important roles.
Finally, the novel is tribute to the beauty of Scripture and features many quotes from the Psalms. If you love compelling tales that combine mystery, adventure, and romance, and enjoy thinking deeply about your faith, I think you’ll find it’s just the book for you!

Fateful Fall ~ Erin Unger

When Ava and her 2 friends start a Private Investigation service, they set out to a job that takes them to the mountains at a resort.  The problems they encounter start right out in chapter one.  They all go to the investigate the murder where the body was found in an outhouse.  During their stay and investigation they meet Cory, a local cowboy, that seems to have his heart set on Ava and she on him. As Ava and her team get closer to the murderer, her life is in danger and Cory is there to protect her.  Can they solve this together before one gets killed? Will they end up together?

I would recommend this book to those that enjoy a good romance, mystery and the type you would see as a Hallmark movie.  I liked this story, but felt it was heavy on the romance and need balance between the murder and romance.  The cover of this book doesn't do the story justice.  I would not have picked up this book in the book store by the cover because it doesn't have the warm feeling this story has.  I am glad I was able to read this and enjoyed it as a good afternoon read. The story does give you a few twist and turns and ends without you suspecting it to.

Child of Prophecy ~ T.E. Bradford

This book is book one of the Divide Series collection for young adult readers. This is a book of imagination, magic and special powers.  When 3 children go to another place, due to Nova having a special power of seeing colors and the future, the other 2 friends follow her to help her.  Nova needs to find that man she keeps seeing in the color lighting, could this be the father she is searching for?  Nova needs answers to be able to understand what this all means... can the magic be a good thing or bad thing?

I would recommend this to the young adults who really like the sci-fy, mystery and imagination reads.  Adults can also enjoy this book, with the understanding that it is for the young crowd, it is a bit hard to follow.  If you don't get into the magic stuff this is not for you.  If you enjoy imagination and going to fantasy places, you will enjoy this.  I found this hard to follow, since I am not into the world of magic or reading this type of book and it was different for me to understand what was really going on.  Some have said this is a Narnia type and I was able to watch the movie but not read the books.  With that being said, I wouldn't say this is a bad book. Overall, I think it would be great for a teen, but I don't buy, read or watch this type of a storyline,  just like alot of people don't like what I read, it depends on the person.

This is book 2 of the series,  it is a sci-fy / christian fiction.  When Zac Wilson finds out he is ageless, doesn't die and is part of a special group, he sets out to find answers.  When he comes across a group of others with the same ability he then sets out to get answers and find out how this is happening, why only a few and who is out to get them?

I recommend this to those that like sci-fy, I was not a fan of this book, but read it to give it a chance and received it to do a review.  I liked the christian part of the book and there was no bad language, sex, or anything vulgar.  In my opinion I can stick with any book and give it a chance if it is clean written.  I didn't read the first book and maybe that is why I couldn't seem to get into this one, it seemed like it would never end.  I think young teens and people that have read the first one, you would like it more.  In fairness, I am a Hallmark movie type of reader and stories out of my normal reading genre tend to not interest me.  I might try book 1 to see if that was part of the problem, but am not rushing to get book 1.  I am not discouraging anyone to read this book, the issue was with me and it was not my type of book.

For years, the theme of immortality has intrigued me. I love the Elves of Middle-Earth, the “happiest and saddest” of the peoples Tolkien created as they watch the ages pass. I love the exploration of aged sorrow in Tuck Everlasting. I’ve stuck with TV shows which shall remain nameless (but, ahem, a few feature vampires) because I’m always wondering how did this writer tackle immortality? Anything new? Are the characters convincingly old and young at the same time?
The thing is, while some of these fiction works satisfy me more than others, I’m always left with a tug of incompletion. Eventually I figured out this tug was a story in my own head and heart wanting to come out, a contemporary story that included the gospel. What might God’s plan be for those whose earthly days seem unnumbered? How would their age affect their interactions with humanity and with faith? These questions were the springboard for the No Less Days series, and of course the answers vary with the individual. Ultimately this is why I write: to explore people, their inner selves, their relationships. My goal is always to create characters that breathe from the page.
In From Sky to Sky, we get a look into the head and heart of Zac Wilson, who has been on the run from God longer than any of us could imagine: a full century playing the prodigal. I always try to be honest about how much life can hurt, “even” for the Christian; if we had triple the number of years to accumulate hurt in this broken world, we’d have a lot of it. That’s true of all my ageless characters, including Zac. To scratch the surface, this man fought in two world wars and has outlived all his children.
But the sum of Zac is much more than his collected wounds. He is a deep-feeling, fun-loving, generous guy. He enjoys music and physical activity. He has an insatiable sweet tooth and a need for open spaces. He’s not afraid to laugh at his own expense, and he has a boundless love for people and the stories of their lives.
My hope is that readers will grow to love this young old guy as they journey with him through some dark times toward redemption and light.

What a book!!  This book was all about Forgiveness, Faith, Family and real life.  When I started to read this book, I thought another book that you know where this is going.  Boy was I wrong, many twist turns and keeps changing from the beginning to the end.  The story begins with Anna being the caregiver for her husband.  Soon she has her life turned upside down and has to rely on her faith and forgiveness to GOD.  When she has one night when she give into the cute Dr. Matthew Carmichael that was her husbands doctor, the story begins to whirlwind.... She finds herself pregnant, middle aged and on her own to determine what to do.  She has grown children that are telling her what to do, a church family believing one thing and then Matt who is younger than her and is determined to be a father to his child.  What decision does Anna do, what secrets will she have??

I would recommend this to anyone that wants a great read.  This story is so up to date with today's world.  Blossom does a wonderful job at keeping the reader interested and wondering what is going to happen.  I couldn't put this down, even when I finished, I kept thinking of this story.  The book deals with many issues that are in the media of today's society.  This is a must read, guaranteed to keep you guessing and not wanting this story to end.... so many side stories that tie all into the same message, Forgiveness and God's word.  Love this book can't wait for Blossom to do another book!!

Cold Case Connection ~ Dana Mentink

This is book 3 of the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series. Dana Mentink does a great job with writing this murder mystery.  When 5 teenagers go into the towns tunnels (that they are told to stay out of) to explore one of them ends up dead.  It ends up been a cold case as the suspects are found not guilty.   Then a few years later when Fiona goes into looking for the murderer again, she ends up dead.  Now 15 years later and Helen, being one of the 5 original friends, needs to deal with the grief and starts to investigate.  Then we have Sergio the brother of the victim and he decides to take his anger of the death and look into what happend that night.  Along with Helen and Sergio the drama and adventure begins.  Through the hunting of clues, many mysterious things keep happening, could this be related to the two previous deaths??

I would recommend this to anyone that wants a good drama, mystery, romance to read.  It is a short read, but keeps moving with many twist and turns.  I am a fan of Dana and this is the first mystery that I have read of hers.  I was excited to read this because I loved her previous books Sit, Stay, Love and Paws for love.. great books about dogs.... also great reads.  I was very pleased at how Dana can pull of the different types of books that she has written, very impressed.  I also liked how she incorporated Jingles into this book.  Great Read!!  (I have not read the other books in the series and was able to read this as a stand alone.)

He has served on the boards of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, Birmingham Theological Seminary, Trinity Seminary, the Biblical Counseling Coalition, and The Owen Center, as well as various Presbytery and Presbyterian Church in America denominational committees to name some of major roles.
His publishing efforts include two books as solo author, three books with a co-author, and numerous chapters in significant volumes in the biblical counseling field, as well as articles for The Journal of Biblical Counseling and several other magazines.
Dr. Eyrich and his wife Pamela have two grown children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Retirement for him is a time for ministry. He writes, teaches, preaches, and travels for the Kingdom. He also enjoys the hobbies of model railroading, hunting, and shooting.

New beginnings are a regular part of life. Sometimes they are well planned, and we eagerly anticipate the future. At other times, we are reticent to move forward into the new beginning. As we think about new beginnings it is appropriate for us to look at the beginning of God’s Word—the Bible.
In Genesis 1:1 ESV, we read, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Here God is the subject, as He is the subject of the entire Bible. From this verse we learn something very important about God—He existed before the universe was created. God has always been, is now, and will always be, present.
Next, we learn that from nothing God created the universe and everything within it. He is the holy, sovereign, majestic, powerful, all-knowing God.
Every time I read these first few verses of the Bible, I am amazed that with just four little words, Let there be light (verse 3), the Creator God spoke into existence light that drove away the darkness. What astounding power! From these verses, we learn that God is the Author of light. Other places in Scripture tell us that God is light itself (1 John 1:5), and James calls Him the Father of lights (James 1:17).
Think about it: here we are today, many years since God spoke those four little words, Let there be light, and as John tells us, The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). The Light—God—brings clarity, order, and understanding, while darkness is seen as evil, void, and chaotic.
I watched the coverage of a solar eclipse on several websites. It was so interesting to listen as a myriad of scientists and others explained the wonders of the universe, and while the science behind it all was quite interesting to me, the coverage fell flat. Why? Because it was totally devoid of any mention of Creator God. Only one man explained the solar eclipse through the lens of God’s Word. As he explained the science behind the solar eclipse, he also explained that THE God of the Universe who created everything that we see, holds the entire universe in His hands, and controls everything that happens, including a solar eclipse.
In the midst of a new beginning or anything else going on in your life, the truths in these passages are wonderful reminders that we can step confidently into any new beginning as we trust in the God who was here in the beginning, is here with us now, and who will be with us always. And what a comfort it is to remember that the light of God dispels the darkness and chaos of sin.

Childhood ~ Greg Schaffer

This is not really a book, it is more of a preview of the book to come..... It is more of a commercial (as they say in tv or one of those see what is to come previews at the end of a book).  The setting is about Katie and her life from grade 4 to college.  It tells of Katie and her two friends, Lynn and Joey.  There isn't much to review about, it is so small of a book, it could be combined into a full chapter of the book to come. 

I did like the story line, the last chapter was interesting unfortunately, I would not spend money on purchasing this book (7.99 paperback on Amazon, .99 price for kindle (maybe if you have Fatherhood to read after it).  I didn't like how it just ends and leaves you hanging making you have to purchase the next book to find out what this story is really about.  If Fatherhood, the full novel of this book was attached to this book it would be good. As a stand alone I feel it is just teasing you...... 

Note** On Amazon 7.99 for paperback (only 50 pages in the whole book) and .99 price for kindle which may be ok if you have "Fatherhood" to read after it.

My last novel Leaving Darkness was difficult to write. I felt called to showcase depression and how the trusting environment of Christian small groups can lead those lost in the darkness to the light of the life they are meant to live. The novel was a direct response to a God-calling to apply my skills as an author and my experience leading similar type groups to create a story that may serve to help some who feel hopelessly lost.
For the next novel, I waited for a similar calling. And waited. And waited. I tend to be impatient like most. I wanted to get back to the creative process.
I wound up waiting several months. God’s time, not mine.
Then it happened, through an article I read on the Internet about a man suing a clinic for aborting his child without his knowledge. The article delved into the father’s rights in the abortion decision.
Abortion from the father’s point of view. That was the calling.
Very early into the project, though, I realized I had unintentionally created a problem. If I told the story completely from the father’s point of view, the mother’s would be diminished, reduced to a two-dimensional interpretation as seen through the father’s eyes. I could solve that by including both points of view in the novel, but that wouldn’t work well for two reasons: first, there are plot elements that the mother knows that are best kept from the readers as part of establishing tension. Second, as noted before, the project calling is from the father’s point of view. I had to stay within that.
But how to deal with the problem?
That’s when Childhood was born (no pun intended). Childhood is a novelette from the mother’s point of view, following her growth as a person from fourth grade to her first year of college. Through Childhood, readers have the opportunity to understand the character as a protagonist who would then become the antagonist in the novel Fatherhood.

Grandparenting with a purpose ~ Lillian Penner

This is the revised and expanded copy from previously in 2015.  Lillian sets the book up that can be read, used as a devotional or weekly bible study.  It is about praying for your grandchildren and putting God's word into your everyday life.  She covers many subjects relating to prayers for your grandchildren, questions as a study guide and a prayer at the end of each chapter.

I don't have grand kids or children and I found this book very interesting and was able to change the word grandchildren to family, friends or a personal name that I could relate to the subject.  I really enjoyed this book of how updated the info is, Lillian cover a section on culture and everyone could read this and relate it to today's world.  I like how she came up with a book just for grandparents, but I also think she could do another version to reach out to others.  Lillian did a very good job and this book would be great for Bible study groups, any reading group that has a mix of grandparents and parents would be really interesting to discuss this book.  I was very glad I was able to review this book as I would not have picked this out to read, but so glad I did.... very good information.

Lillian Ann Penner is an author, speaker, and grandmother residing with her husband, John, in Portland, Oregon. They have been married for more than fifty years and have three married sons and nine grandchildren.
Penner is the national prayer coordinator for Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN), and she writes about her passion of intentional praying grandparents for CGN’s website. She is involved in leadership in the women’s Bible study, the fifty-five plus group in her church, and leads a Grandparents@Prayer group.
She has been active in church ministry for over fifty years, led an outreach ministry for young mothers, a mentoring ministry for women, and various other church ministries. She has participated in short term missions in Ukraine and volunteered with several Christian ministries.
She and her husband enjoy traveling, but most of all, enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Finding Joy in Praying for my Grandchildren
What a joy it is to have that precious little grandchild come running into your arm with hugs and kisses. The six-year-old calling to tell you she lost her first tooth or your seven-year-old grandson excited about making his first goal in his soccer game.
In addition to senior discounts, grandchildren are one of the rewards of growing older. Mary H. Waldrip says it well, “Grandchildren are God’s way of compensating us for growing old.”
I now have nine grandchildren, ages ranging from sixteen years to thirty-eight years, four are married, and we have five great-granddaughters. As a long-distance grandmother for many years, I was not fully aware of my grandchildren’s immediate needs. I prayed that God would bless them, give them good health and protection. Ultimately, I became frustrated and felt something was lacking with my vague and general prayers. I asked God to show me how to become more deliberate in praying for them.
After reading books about grandparenting and prayer full of practical advice, I was encouraged to use specific Scriptures in praying for my grandchildren. The books motivated me to pray regularly for their emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
Best of all, praying God’s Word has enabled me to pray with His power, direction, and wisdom. As their grandparent, I can have a significant role in influencing their lives by praying for them during these turbulent years has given me fulfillment and satisfaction in praying for them.
The faith of our children is weakened in the classrooms; young adults raised in our hostile environment are walking away from God in record numbers. Hopelessness is prevalent, and our society is reeling from the opioid crisis, mass shootings, fatherlessness, divorce, and so much more.
Recognizing the urgent need for my grandchildren’s spiritual needs God gave me a passion of praying Scripture for my grandchildren.
