Once We were Strangers ~ Shawn Smucker

When Shawn Smucker wants to write a book about the journey that a Syrian refugee family has had to go through, he is matched with Mohamad and his family.  Shawn is not sure that he really should be writing the book but goes through interviewing Mohamad.  Mohamad is very positive and honest about having to flee his homeland, knowing he will never be able to go back to his home.  We learn about what it is like for a refugee to leave everything behind and start all over with the only thing you own is in a backpack.  Shawn is a not into having friends, his life consists of work and spending time at home with his family.  As the two come together, a friendship develops that will change both their lives.

I would recommend this book to everyone to read and learn about what it is like to leave your country and know you can never go back.  You will also learn how we all have the same concerns in life for family, faith, jobs and understanding busy life isn't always the way of life.  This book shows a different side of life that tells you to slow down and enjoy friends.   I couldn't stop reading this book and finished in one afternoon.  This is a great read!!
