Why did you write the book?

 After graduating from an alternative education high school and having two children by the age eighteen, my heart was drawn to jobs to help children like myself. I started out by working seven years at a Juvenile Court Schools in Las Vegas, Nevada, and five years at the Clark County Department of Family Services, as a juvenile service assistant, working with troubled teens. In 2004, I relocated to Terre Haute, Indiana, where I worked for two years at Gibault Inc., as a youth specialist, working with teen boy sex offenders. After leaving the Gibault home, I worked a few months at the Vigo County Courthouse as a bailiff. However, I eventually decided to leave my job within a few months because it became uncomfortable since my family name was well-known in the court system. My work experiences led me to start asking questions and made me realize I needed my own healing from childhood trauma after growing up in abuse and addiction.

 What I learned through all of my work experiences and my own life struggles is that if kids don’t get the proper help they need, they will either get involved in a gang, become addicted to drugs or alcohol, end up in prison, or even death. I knew God was calling me to take a step of faith and action to get the help I needed, so I could help others who experienced similar childhoods.

 Trauma may be the greatest mission field of the 21st century, and the most misunderstood issue of our day.

 My healing journey began when I could no longer pretend everything was okay. After being stuck in my trauma and my own addictions for years, I knew I needed to write a book and let others know there is a way out. My book was birthed out of my healing process. Cross Addicted: Breaking Free from Family Trauma and Addiction offers a hopeful path to recovery for those who are hurting and traumatized.

 One in four U.S. students will witness or experience a traumatic event before the age four, and more than two-thirds by age sixteen.

The Amish Menorah and Other Stories was born out of a happy meeting between Patrick E. Craig and Thomas Nye at an Amish writers and readers event put on by Connie Spradling Lynch in Shipshewana, Indiana in 2019. Most of these readers did not know that there were several men who wrote Amish fiction. So Patrick and Tom decided to do something about that. After the conference, invitations went out to Murray Pura, Willard Carpenter, Jerry Eicher and Amos Wyse. Deb Haggerty at Elk Lake Publishers signed on and The Amish Menorah came to be.

This is book 5 of the Cross Timber Family Saga  and part of the Thanksgiving Books & Blessings Collection 3.  This is a Historical Christian Fiction book that takes place during the civil war.  When two friends and partners have to fight on the opposites sides of each other, one for the North the other for the South, the trials start.  Their stories are told in this book of their friendship and the love of their lives that they left behind.  The women they left at home are friends and left to pray, keep faith and have hope that they both return alive.  

If you enjoy history reads and espically like civil war reads then you will really enjoy this one.  Caryl does a great job of details and writing about history that will keep you intreged and reading until the end.  This is book 5 of the series, however you can read this as a stand alone.  This is the first book of the series i have read and didn't have any issues understanding or following the story.

Though it proved to be an extraordinarily hot summer—water wells dried up and crops withered in the fields as the hundred-degree days went on and on. On the 8^th of July, 1860, many residents of Dallas sought refuge at Wallace Peak’s downtown drugstore; that’s where the fire started.

Flames spread quickly from one business to another, blown by the hot winds from one to the next. By the time the fire was extinguished half of Dallas’ business district was gone. Now, phosphorous matches are said to be the culprit through spontaneous combustion for the fires as they all started in establishments carrying the highly flammable fire-lighting sticks.

Many say the incident called the Texas Troubles precipitated the Southern States’ cessation and even the Civil War itself. Mainly because of the FAKE NEWS spread by a young editor at the Dallas Herald. He sent letters to newspapers in Houston, Austin, and others across the state blaming a slave up rise for the fires and warning that the slaves were rising up.

Guess we aren’t the first Americans to deal with fake new! Before it was all over, at least a hundred men had hanged, slaves and their white abolitionist advocates. The panic never truly abated because too soon, the war between the states that pit brothers against brothers began.

This is where TEXAS TROUBLES, book five in the Cross Timbers Romance Family Saga begins. One brother went the way of the vigilantes, the other traveled north to join the Federalists. I think you’ll love this story of love and the most terrible times our country has ever experienced.

Sand & Mistletoe ~ Chautona Havig

When Portia Spear and her family decide to spend Christmas at a rented beach house to have one more family only holiday together, the drama begins.  The family has many different issues going on between the four sisters and their children, while their mom and dad keep the peace and hopefully the Christmas traditions together.  It is only going to be family when boyfriends show up and cause friction between sisters.  Then Portia meets the cute guy visiting his family next door on the beach one day.  They meet and find that he is a single dad with a deaf son.  While Portia knows sign language this brings them together.  Spending time together the whole vacation time, will this be a relationship that will last when the time ends?  How can the sisters survive the time together?

If you want a read for the holiday season that is like a Hallmark Christmas movie then this book is for you.  This was an ok book for me, it was very slow for my reading and predictable.  I always enjoy books by Chautona, however, this one was hard for me to get through, it seemed to drag on, the begining was moving along and then half way through the end felt like it would never come.  I had to force myself to finish this book as it seemed to repeat over and over.  This one was too predicting, but a read you may enjoy if you are looking for a light, fluffy and Christmas Holiday read.

What Happens When an Author Rewrites History

To be fair, almost none of us wanted to be there.

And really, that wasn’t fair. Two of our daughters planned as a “destination Christmas” bash for the whole family—just a nice getaway in San Diego for the “last” Christmas we’d probably all be in the same place on the same days.  The kids were getting older, getting married, and even moving out of state. It was a beautiful thing for them to try to do for us.

But Havigs are homebodies who like their traditions, and most of us left in Ridgecrest weren’t too thrilled being “dragged” four hours south to celebrate Christmas in a beautiful house on a cliff overlooking the San Diego countryside.  It had everything, game room, lots of space, yards, hiking trails, an infinity pool, a hot tub…

Yeah. That hot tub kicked off the weekend with a splash all right.  With no lighting around it, and no railing either, my husband stepped out of it and right off the ledge—down a hill (at least fifteen feet), bouncing off boulders and thankfully, stopped by a fence. Otherwise, he’d have rolled for a LONG way.

Get this.  He broke nothing.  Don’t even ask me how (because we all know Who took care of that, right?).

Still, I spent my Christmas Eve sitting in an ER waiting for someone to tell us the damage (superficial scrapes and deep bruising). The whole time I thought, “This has got to be a book.”

Two years later, it was.

I say this at the end of the book, but I need to say it again.

People who know our family will recognize some of my kids (I left four of them out of the story).  They will also say, “Wait, she’s not like that!”

And that’s the point.  I put just enough of real people in it to really capture the feel of the personalities, meshed some quirks (including the ones that got left out), and then set them in a stressful situation and really way over-exaggerated actual responses.  I want to say this here again.  None of us acted just like I portrayed us in Sand & Mistletoe (although, frankly, I wouldn’t have blamed a couple of them if they’d wanted to). Unlike A Bird Died, I didn’t even try to stick to facts.

Instead of San Diego hill country, I put us at my favorite beach—Ventura. I stuck our rented beach house where the Pierpont Inn is/used to be (don’t even know if it exists anymore). Reese’s parents live in the house I lived in when I was nine—right there on Pierpont just a block from the beach.  And where they went to get mistletoe… one of my favorite places in the world.

So, here’s my version of the tale—the one I wrote instead of told.  Just like Francie Nolan learned from her teacher in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.  When I tell the story, I tell it exactly how it happened.  However… I wrote what should (not) have happened!  (this is much more interesting than the real story).

Early Nez Perce Business Women

 As I’ve been researching for my current Call of the Rockies series, I’ve had the pleasure of diving deep into the culture of the Nez Perce tribe. I found it interesting that one of the primary food sources of The People (as they called themselves) was camas roots.

But what really drew my notice was how the women would cultivate entire fields of camas root, store what they needed for their family through the winter, then use the extras for bartering. Some savvy women would become quite wealthy from their business dealings!

The bulbs of the camas plant are full of calories and nutrients, and each fall, Nez Perce families would travel to their particular camas meadow (a section of land whose camas rights had probably been passed down from generation to generation within their family). Many of these meadows were located near present-day Weippe, Moscow or Grangeville, where the onion-shaped bulbs grew thickly.

Women used pointed wooden tools to harvest the bulbs, and could often gather over 50 pounds a day, satisfying their full winter’s supply within just a few days.

Native American peoples who ate camas include the Nez Perce (Nimíipuu), Cree, Coast Salish, Kalapuya, and Blackfoot, and Yakama, among many others. Not all of these people groups harvested camas themselves. Instead, many relied on trade in order to procure it. Trade networks were established all the way from the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, and a shrewd businesswoman who tended her camas meadows well could provide everything her family needed and more!

This book is a fun read that has more then murder, it also has the mix of romance, friendship, family and failth.  It is a good afternoon read and I found book 2 to be a continuation of this story and it will not let you down.  I thought book 2 was more of a faster pace and page turner, both are good reads...

About the Author
Barbara Cornthwaite lives in the middle of Ireland with her husband and children. She taught college English before “retiring” to do something she loves far more; her days are now filled with homeschooling her six children, trying to keep the house tidy (a losing battle), and trying to stay warm in the damp Irish climate (also a losing battle). She is surrounded by medieval castles, picturesque flocks of sheep, and ancient stone monuments. These things are unappreciated by her children, who are more impressed by traffic jams, skyscrapers, and hot weather.

Point of Danger ~ Irene Hannon

 This is book one of the Triple Threat series.  When Eve Reilly receives a suspision package on her doorstep, she calls law enforcement and they are soon wrapped up in a  harrassment case that could lead to murder.  Eve is a radio host that doesn't hold back comments or her thoughts.... leading to her having a big target of people that may want to kill her.  Detective Brent is on the case and finds it difficult because nothing seems to match and can't seem to link evidence to the package.  As Eve gets more threats, Brent feels she is in more danger than she knows and she keeps her show and thoughts going.  As Brent keeps on the case, he feels more to Eve then just the case.  Does Eve feel the same?  Can he keep her safe?

I would recommend this to anyone that is a fan of Irene because she does it again.  This book is full of twist and turns and just keeps you turning the pages until the end.  If you love reading murder/mysteries then this book will not let you down.  Can't wait for book 2.........
